The United States Federal Highway Administration (FHA) reports that more than 840 traffic-related work zone deaths happened in 2019. The number of deaths was an 11% increase from those that occurred in 2018 due to the same reasons. Everyday drivers and construction workers are put at risk and in harm’s way. According to Business Wire, the construction industry is expected to grow by 4.5% in 2022. The reasons for this projection include investments in renewable energy, transport, housing projects, and water. The forecast of increases in construction is despite a contraction in this industry in 2021 and 2020. A boost in construction is happening across the United States, and Las Vegas is no exception to this trend.
How to Stay Safe
If you or someone you know is driving around Las Vegas and comes across construction work zones, below are several steps that you can take to keep yourself safe in these situations:
- Slow Your Vehicle Down: Remember that when you are driving around or in a construction work zone you should slow down. Depending on the work zone area, you may want to reduce your speed by at least 10 MPH unless the zone has a posted speed limit that states otherwise. Keep your slowed speed until you have exited the work zone or see a sign saying the zone has ended;
- Try to Minimize Distractions: Because a work zone is inherently more dangerous, you should do all you can to minimize any distractions. There will likely be a sign in a construction work zone indicating not to use a handheld cell phone while driving in the area. Moreover, Nevada law prohibits all cell phone use while driving unless there is an emergency;
- Keep an Eye Out: Whether it is construction laborers or tools/equipment, you need to keep an eye out while driving through a work zone. The riskiest aspects of driving through a construction zone are navigating around heavy machinery, uneven lanes, and workers moving back and forth from the site;
- Plan Ahead: Before you head out to your destination be sure to research the route you are going to take. If you can, try to avoid construction work zones and insead use any detours that are available to you.
- Move into the Open Lane: When you approach a lane closure in a construction work zone, try to move into the open lane as soon as you can. This will keep you in the flow of the work zone traffic shifts. Also, when you change lanes, pay attention to the cars around you and check your blind spot before moving;
- Keep Your Distance: Just like if you are driving in regular traffic, maintain extra distance between your car and the one in front of you at all times. It is common for rear-end crashes to occur in contruction work zones and you should try to avoid this as much as possible.
