Earlier this month a Las Vegas teen was severely hurt in an early morning bicycle accident that happened at an intersection, according to news reports. The Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) reported that the collision occurred around 5:45 am around West Rochelle Avenue and South Cimarron Road. According to authorities, a white Ford Escape was approaching the intersection traveling south on Cimarron at the same time the teen was approaching the intersection traveling east. The two collided with one another in the middle of the intersection and the teen was rushed to a local medical trauma center with severe injuries. No one else was injured in the crash and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Nevada Bicycle Accidents
While bicycle accidents are not as common as other types of crashes that occur annually in Nevada, the resulting injuries tend to be the most severe. This is because, unlike drivers and passengers in cars, a bicyclist does not have sufficient protection when colliding with a vehicle. Recently as many as six bicyclists were killed in car accidents in Nevada, while many more cyclists were significantly injured in crashes.
A Nevada bicycle accident victim can seek monetary compensation for the following harm suffered, according to state law:
- Property damage;
- Medical expenses;
- Loss of past and future income;
- Pain and suffering;
- Costs of rehabilitation.
A bicycle accident victim may seek legal recourse against the at-fault driver’s car insurance company and, depending on the circumstances and amount of damage, possibly the driver personally.
Steps to Take After a Bicycle Crash
If you are involved in a bicycle crash, there are several important steps you can take to protect your rights. This includes:
- Contacting the police or 9-1-1 right away;
- Seeking medical advice and treatment as soon as possible;
- Keeping copies of all accident and medical records;
- Taking photos and/or vidoes of the accident scene and your injuries;
- Obtaining the insurance and contact information of the driver(s);
- Getting contact information of any eyewitnesses;
- Avoiding speaking to insurance companies and/or representatives.
Following the above steps will help secure your ability to seek monetary compensation for your injuries and losses. The closer in time to the bicycle accident you can take the above steps, the better chances you have of having a strong personal injury claim in Nevada.
