A car crash that occurred Thursday afternoon left a pedestrian hospitalized in Sparks, Nevada. According to reports, local firefighters, police, and emergency personnel responded to the scene of the accident, on Pyramid Way. Reports from local authorities further show that a pedestrian was struck by a car near the intersection of York and Pyramid Way. The crash led first responders to secure the area and close off the road, causing traffic delays in the area. The accident victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries resulting from the crash. The accident is still under investigation.
Nevada Pedestrian Crash Statistics
Each year lawmakers across the nation work hard to pass laws to better protect pedestrians; Nevada is no different. Despite numerous measures taken by legislators to try to further safeguard pedestrians, these accidents keep happening at an alarming rate.
According to the Nevada Current, although 2020 statistics show a decrease in pedestrian deaths in Clark County when compared to data from the same time in 2019, the numbers also reveal a significant increase in sidewalk deaths. Approximately 20% of pedestrian deaths in the first six months of 2020 happened on the sidewalk; this rate is four times higher than the 5% average from prior years. Indeed, the highest percentage on record in Clark County during the first sixth months of a year was 13%, which was the record from 2017. Moreover, records from the Traffic Safety Coalition at UNLV indicate that eight of the 28 pedestrian deaths so far in 2020 involved drivers who fled the scene of the accident.
As can be seen, the state of Nevada continues to see an increasing trend and problem regarding pedestrians being seriously harmed or killed in traffic accidents.
Main Causes of Pedestrian Accidents
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) reports that the number of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes on America’s roads totaled 6,283 — a more than 3% increase when compared to 1990, a year with the most deaths on record. There are several reasons for pedestrian accidents. These include:
- Drivers’ failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians;
- Pedestrians improperly crossing an intersection or roadway;
- Pedestrians who are standing, working, lying, or playing on the road;
- Poor road visibility due to weather conditions;
- Drivers being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication;
- Vehicles running off the road and striking unknowing pedestrians;
- Distracted driving or distracted walking;
- People walking on highways or roads that are prohibited for pedestrians.
