Car Accidents are common in the United States and most accidents in Nevada occur in Clark County. The top reasons for these traffic collisions include driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving, and other negligent habits. In 2020, there were approximately 314 traffic-related fatalities, 186 of which occurred within Clark County. This averages to one death every other day.
Tips to Follow
- Always wearing a seatbelt. While this may sound like a simple suggestion, wearing a seat belt while traveling in a vehicle significantly reduces the likelihood of death when involved in a crash by as much as 40%. Studies show that the state of Nevada has one of the lowest seat belt usage in the nation. For this reason, state legislators are trying to make changes by enacting stricter laws;
- Remain calm behind the wheel. As the holiday season approaches, traffic on America’s roads continues to increase. Being frustrated during high traffic periods will neither help you or others. Instead of getting stressed out during rush-hour traffic, try to plan ahead and leave earlier to reach your destination more calmly;
- Avoid multitasking when driving. It is against Nevada law to drive while using a phone. Distracted driving, however, involves more than just cell phone usage. Other examples could include eating, texting, using the GPS, putting on makeup, or other things that can take your eyes off the road. This is because an accident can occur in a matter of seconds;
- Stay within the speed limit. More than 30% of all car accidents in America are due to speeding. Keep in mind that driving over the posted speed limit will not guarantee that you will arrive at your destination on time. Driving just 10 miles per hour above the speed limit, however, can increase your risk of being involved in a car accident by as much as 50%.
- Keep an eye out for bad weather. As November approaches, so does the winter, and the likelihood of those in the state experiencing some extreme weather. The chances of being involved in an accident increase when you drive in the rain or snow. Be sure to drive slowly, make sure your care is properly maintained, and that your vehicle has the right equipment.
