H&P Lawās “A Second Chance: How My Accident Changed My Goals for the Futureā Scholarship strives to help students pursue their academic dreams after serious accidents. This year, the scholarship selection committee awarded the scholarship to Christopher Dailey, a rising sophomore at the University of Notre Dame.
Daileyās dangerous accident with an 18-wheeler transformed his life. While he escaped without physical injuries, his scholarship essay takes an honest look at how accidents like these can have a long-term impact on a personās mental health.
Our Las Vegas personal injury lawyers are proud to offer Dailey $2,500 to dedicate toward his continued studies.
The Collision That Changed Daileyās Life
Dailey was on a mission trip in South Carolina when his life changed forever. While in a van with several other members of his youth group, Dailey realized that the driver had taken a premature left turn into oncoming traffic. Almost immediately, an 18-wheeler collided with the van, putting all seven passengers at risk for devastating injuries.
Dailey and his fellow young group members managed to walk away from the collision with their lives, although not uninjured. Dailey suffered from serious neck and head injuries, and he remembers his life flashing before his eyes before blacking out. Now, with nearly a year separating him from the crash, his PTSD still makes regular left turns a psychological challenge.
While Dailey speaks candidly about how his PTSD has impacted his quality of life, he also has endless compassion for his fellow victims. āBehind us was another car of students with some of my other best friends in there,ā Dailey says. āThey watched us nearly get killed. I can only imagine how scary of a moment that was for them.ā
Getting to Know Christopher Dailey
Who is Christopher Dailey, though, outside of an accident survivor? He is a sports enthusiast and a dedicated student. He created a sports media company, The Sports Court (TSC), when he was an eighth grader. Since the companyās inception, Dailey has interviewed over 330 professional athletes, including Shaquille OāNeal and Saquon Barkley.
That early experience continues to serve Dailey well in his college career. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, he balances the demands of his major with a job as an anchor on Notre Dame television. He also works as a beat writer for the student newspaper, a broadcaster for ESPN+ sporting events, and a student radio announcer.
To say that Dailey is committed to sports entertainment seems like an understatement. Heās not afraid to leverage his passion for the betterment of others, though. Heās created a futsal league to raise money for St. Jude, working with sponsors like Jersey Shore Restaurant Group and FINS. His efforts in the sports media world have raised $20,000 to fight childhood cancer.
Daileyās Academic Career
When heās not busy reporting on Notre Dame sports or interviewing some of the top athletes in the country, Dailey is studying Film and Television with a minor in Journalism. He hopes that his academic and professional experience can lead him to a career as a broadcaster for Major League Soccer and hopes one day he can be President of the United States Soccer Federation.
He also notes that he wants to continue raising money for St. Jude and fighting back against childhood cancer, no matter where his career takes him.
When asked how his accident has impacted his goals for the future, Dailey candidly discusses how heās had to take steps to prevent fear from dictating his path. If he had the opportunity to have a conversation with his younger self, he says that heād say, āItās okay to be scared, but donāt let the fear win. Struggle builds character and shapes your future.ā
