Las Vegas law enforcement and firefighters were called to respond and provide emergency medical assistance at the scene of a car accident in Las Vegas that resulted in multiple injuries just after midday on May 21st. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), two sedans – one silver and one red – collided with each other on Farm Road at the intersection of North Durango Drive. The crash caused the red vehicle to go off the road, finally coming to a stop on the sidewalk at the streets’ intersection. At least one accident victim, according to authorities, was transported to a local hospital for medical care for injuries suffered. The accident currently remains under investigation by authorities.
Nevada Car Accidents
Car accidents happen every day in Nevada. These crashes force accident victims to seek medical treatment at local area hospitals. Studies show that more than 22,000 people a year experience life-altering injuries from car accidents. While car accidents can have many causes, the most common reasons for vehicle collisions includes:
- Speeding drivers;
- Negligent drivers;
- Distracted drivers;
- Reckless drivers; and
- Impaired drivers.
It is critical to understand that when a driver takes his or her eyes off the road for even a few seconds, the results can be life-changing if an accident occurs. This is because some car accident victims never fully recover from injuries suffered.
Damages Available
Nevada law allows for negligent drivers to be held legally and financially responsible for damages caused by reckless or careless driving. A judge or jury may award compensatory damages to an injured victim. These damages are an accident victim’s total out-of-pocket expenses plus reasonable future costs. Examples include medical expenses, property damage, and lost wages.
Under Nevdaa law, car owners and operators must carry certain amounts of car insurance coverage. Specifically:
- $25,000 for bodily injury or death, per person;
- $50,000 for total bodily injury or death, per accident;
- $20,000 for property damage, per accident.
If you are involved in a Nevada car accident and are seeking monetary compensation for injuries suffered or property damage, there are several options under the law including filing a claim:
- With your own car insurance company if the policy covers personal injury;
- A third-party claim with the at-fault driver’s car insurance company; or
- A personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver.
Oftentimes filing a personal injury lawsuit gets the best and highest monetary compensation. While it is tempting to accept the first monetary offer an insurance company makes to settle your claim, it is critical to keep in mind that one of the key conditions of accepting a settlement offer in Nevada is the claimant waiving his or her right to any future claims for damages – whether known or unknown – in exchange for payment.
