Car crashes that are the result of one or more drivers running a red light are often fatal. Unfortunately, red light crashes are becoming more and more common in America – and Nevada is no exception to this dangerous trend. In fact, red light accidents have been increasing in the state, according to news reports. A driver’s failure to obey a stop sign and/or traffic light signals can result in serious traffic infractions. More important, however, is that the potential consequences can be deadly for all parties involved in a red light crash.
Red Light Statistics Across the United States
According to research by the American Automobile Association (AAA), as many as two people die every day in the United States has a result of one or more drivers running a red light. Most recently, 939 individuals died in 2017 in fatal red light car accidents; this number is a 28% increase over the amount of deaths reported during the past seven years and the highest number in a decade. Studies further show that 46% of victims who are killed in a red light crash were either passengers in the vehicle that ran the red light or passengers in the other vehicle. More than half – 57% – of the victims who died in fatal red light crashes were not in the vehicle that was responsible for the collision. Approximately 5% of those killed in a red light crash are either pedestrians or cyclists. And, about 35% of those drivers who were responsible for running the red light die in the crash caused by their own traffic violation.
Stay Safe When at an Intersection
Research shows that more than 2,200 people suffered serious injuries in the United States as a result of intersection-related car accidents between the years of 2012 and 2016. These crashes highlight how important it is for drivers to be aware of their surroundings when crossing an intersection. 61% of these crashes occurred in broad daylight; 32% occurred at night, but with lighting present such as street lamps and businesses.
Drivers have some power in avoiding red light crashes and accidents at intersections. Some useful driving tips include:
- Slowing down when approaching intersections;
- Not attempting to “beat the light” when it changes to yellow;
- Scan the road for the actions of others in the vicinity of the stop light;
- Scan both sides of the road for crossing traffic before entering the intersection;
- Ensure your brake systems and tires are in good working condition.
All of these tips can help keep you safer on Nevada’s roads, particularly when you are crossing a busy intersection. While you cannot control the actions of other drivers, you can do as much as possible to keep you and your passengers from being seriously injured in a red light car accident.
