Jonathan Goldsmith, AKA the “most interesting man in the world,” is now engaged in a lawsuit that some are sarcastically calling the most interesting lawsuit in the world.
Mr. Goldsmith has represented Dos Equis Beer through television commercial and print media for some time now. Mr. Goldsmith’s former talent agency, who represented him while he was being portrayed as a very interesting person, is now suing him for breach of contract.
The former talent agency is claiming that Mr. Goldsmith has not paid them their fees—to the tune of Two Million Dollars. They claim that Mr. Goldsmith was contractually obligated to pay them 10% of his earnings from late 2014 through the end of 2016.
Interesting people wouldn’t take a claim like this lying down, though. Mr. Goldsmith has filed a counter-claim against his former talent agency claiming that one of its employees unlawfully disclosed the terms of a 2012 confidentiality agreement that put Mr. Goldsmith in a position where he could have lost his role as the Dos Equis spokesman.
The talent agency, in their complaint, cleverly stated, “…Goldsmith’s preference for Dos Equis intoxicated him into believing that he could ignore his promises and obligations.” They go on to state, “…Goldsmith landed a role that more accurately portraying his true character; he would have landed the role of ‘The Least Honorable Man in the Entertainment Business.’”
Mr. Goldsmith’s attorney maintains that his “…client has been in the entertainment business for over 50 years, he is an honorable man, he’s never cheated anyone.”
This “interesting” legal battle could rage on for months or years, so keep an eye out for “interesting” updates as things shake out.
