Hi my name is Zach Parry. I’m going to be talking to you today about, what to do if you are the victim of a hit and run accident. Unfortunately, approximately one in nine accidents or eleven percent, nationwide, involve a driver who flees the scene. If you live in LA, that number is an astronomical forty-eight percent. Forty-eight percent of all accidents in LA are hit-and-run accidents.
But, if you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope. Follow these steps to maximize your potential for finding the other driver and holding them responsible for the injuries and damages that they cause.
Number one, call the police immediately. Tell the police exactly what has occurred—that you are a victim of a hit-and-run. Tell them your location, and they should respond to scene. Number two, gather as much information as you can.
Anything you can remember about the driver or the vehicle the driver was driving could be helpful—even a partial license plate. If you know what state the license plate was issued in, the make model color of the vehicle, what the bumper-stickers said, any other identifying characteristics, or identifying characteristics of the driver.
Call your insurance company. Report the accident to your insurance company. Give them the same information you gave the police. Information you have gathered. Sometimes, they have tools at their disposal but they can help identify these hit-and-run drivers.
Call an attorney. As an attorney, I’ve had the opportunity to help some victims of hit-and-run drivers. And I’ve been able to identify more than one these drivers to hold them accountable.
Finally, get whatever medical help you need. That should be one of your first priorities. And, if you are in an accident, do not flee the scene. It’s a felony. If you flee the scene of an accident, not only are you a felon who could be subjected to civil penalties, you’re also a bad person. So don’t do it.
